Submariner Funerals

'Crossing the Bar'

Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.

"Twilight and the evening bell,
And after it the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark

For tho' from out our bourne
Of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar."

Alfred Lord Tennyson

Peacey Chris

holder501 200x150.fw

It is with regret that I have to inform you that CPO TASI Chris Peacey crossed the bar at home on Saturday 24th March aged 93.

At the age of 15 Chris joined the RN as a boy seaman at Ganges in 1939. His first ship was the Prince of Wales and he was one of the seven remaining survivors of its sinking by the Japanese in 1941. He was interviewed by BBC South Today prior to the naming ceremony of the new Prince of Wales.

He joined the Submarine Service in 1947 and served on the following boats: Trespasser, Artemis, Tactician, Tireless, Tiptoe and Telemachus. He was drafted to Affray but on his way to join the boat on 13th April 1951 he was knocked of his motorbike and ended up in Southampton hospital. Affray sailed on 16th April never to return.

He left the Submarine Service in 1956 and served in General Service until 1966 when he left the RN as a CPO TASI.

Chris had such an interesting career in both General Service and Submarines that a book was being written on his life. Unfortunately, Chris did not get to see the end product which will be published at the end of April. the book is aptly named "War and Peacey".

The funeral service will be held at Portchester Crematorium on Monday 23rd April at 1300.

Chris was not a current member of the Association but an Ex member of Gorport Branch, and I think it would be fitting if some of us could attend his funeral to give him a good send off as he does not have any family remaining in the area. The Ganges Association will be parading their standard (arranged by Shep Wooley) as Chris was a member of that Association. I will try to arrange for our standard to be paraded.
