The Submariners Association Trophy

The Submariner:

Needs to work well as part of a team. Serving on board a Submarine takes a special type of person, who needs to be able to live and work in a confined space, where conditions can quickly change from relatively calm to extremely active circumstances.

After the ten weeks Basic Training at HMS Raleigh, the student will go on to Professional Training, for anywhere between 3 and 6 months, this time at the Submarine School also based at HMS Raleigh.

As well as learning the specialist skills based around the students career, be it Submarine Sonar, Tactical Systems, Communications Information Systems, Weapons Engineering, Marine Engineering, or the varied specialisations of the Logistics Branch; the student will be sent to complete 10 weeks of Submarine Theory training called Submarine Qualification(Dry) or SMQ(Dry). Depending of which class of Submarine he is being streamed to will depend on where he completes this training, either at Faslane for Vanguard and Astute Class or at Devonport for Trafalgar Class submarines.

The student will also have completed SETT training during this period. Throughout SMQ(Dry) he will be examined on the various systems that are required to make a submarine operate. On successful completion of this theory training, he will be sent to sea on his particular class of submarine where he will consolidate his training culminating in Fwd, Aft, (and Strategic Weapon System) walkrounds and an oral board based on Submarine Routines and Systems; the end result will be the award of the coveted badge of a qualified Submariner 'The Dolphins', this forms part of their professional training known as SMQ(Wet).
SATrophy
HMS Raleigh embraced the idea for the Submariners Association to sponsor a trophy which includes a lecture during professional training. The Trophy and lecture is presented by the Association, the instructors or a combination of the two, and includes showing the SA DVD.

A 14inch Submariner Statuette (known as AB Reid) made by Ballantynes of Walkerburn in the Borders of Scotland is awarded to the best course pupil. It is mounted on an engraved mahogany base with a set of Dolphins. The trophy will be known as 'The Submariners Association Trophy'

At the Royal Navy Submarine School within HMS Raleigh, there is an Honours Board with the recipients' name appended. The Trophy will be on display next to the Honours Board. The winner also receives a Certificate, produced and printed by HMS Raleigh.

There are on average 4 courses per year. The Chief Instructors decide on the best student, based not purely on academic results but on those qualities required of a potential Submariner; those qualities being Courage, Loyalty, Discipline, Integrity, Respect for others, and Selfless Commitment. This trophy is kept at the School and not taken away by the pupil. The award winner is presented with a certificate and individual gift including the SA DVD, this trophy is awarded bi-annually.

Billy Dobson Esq. Chairman of the Plymouth Branch of the Submariners Association will assist in giving the lectures during their Course. The SA DVD along with a Power Point presentation provided by Les Catlin of the Gosport Branch will also be shown. The basis of the lecture is on the benefits of maintaining the ethos of 'the Trade' by joining the Association when the pupil has completed their SMQ(Wet) and awarded their Dolphins.

NEW AWARD FOR THE BEST RECRUIT TO THE SILENT SERVICE
A Plymouth based Submariner has become the first recipient of a new award donated to the Royal Navy by the National Submariners Association to be called 'The Submariners Association Trophy'.
Warfare Specialist Mathew Barker joined the Royal Navy last year and completed his professional training at the Royal Navy Submarine School, based within HMS Raleigh, in July 2011. His commitment and dedication to becoming a member of the Submarine Service marked him out as one of the top students and he was therefore judged to be a worthy winner of the new prize. He was formally presented with the Trophy by the Second Sea Lord and Commander in Chief Naval Home Command Vice Admiral Charles Montgomery CBE ADC at the Passing out Parade at HMS Raleigh on Friday 14 October accompanied by Dave Barlow the Chairman of the Submariners Association.

The 25-year-old, who hales from Colchester, joined the Plymouth based submarine HMS Talent in August for the final stages of his submarine qualifying course. He said: "I'm rather flattered to receive this award. I didn't expect it and I'm very proud. I'm looking forward to taking it home to show my mum and dad, Pam and Mick. I really enjoyed training. It was very hard and extremely difficult at times, but I made some good friends and it's definitely the people you share it with that make it all the more rewarding. I've yet to go to sea on board HMS Talent, but so far I'm enjoying it and get on with everyone." Mathew is set to join HMS Turbulent temporarily to complete his 'Part 3' before rejoining HMS Talent.

The trophy will be awarded on a biannual basis to the recruit who displays and fully embraces the qualities expected not only of a member of the Royal Navy, but also of a potential Submariner. Each recipient must show his dedication to his chosen career path and display the requisite levels of professionalism, drive and outstanding moral fibre.

Mr Dave Barlow, the National Chairman of the Submariners Association, visited HMS Raleigh to present the trophy to the Submarine School. He joined the Royal Navy in 1963 and served in submarines from 1970 to 1979. Mr Barlow said: 'As an Association we wanted to have more interaction and engagement with serving Submariners.
The association is open to Submariners as soon as they qualify, so we decided to present a trophy to the school with the objectives to forge closer links with the younger submariners and that the recipient will go and tell his fellow Submariners about us and we can get more and more of them into the Association.
For me the Submarine Service is the most professional and closely knit of all the services. Our association DVD is called 'A Breed Apart - A Band of Brothers' and that really sums us up.

Commander Nick Meredith, the Officer in Charge of the Royal Navy Submarine School, said: "We are very grateful to the Submariners Association for their support and the donation of this trophy. Heritage and ethos are very important to us in the Submarine Service and awards such as this mark the strong bond that exists between Submariners past and present."

PresPhoto3

The new trophy is a replica of the 'Submariner' which forms part of the memorial in Westminster Abbey to the men of the Commandos, Royal Navy Submarine Service, Airborne and Special Air Service who fell in World War II. It was designed by Gilbert Ledward and was completed in 1946. The Memorial was unveiled by Winston Churchill in May 1948 and is situated in the West Cloister of Westminster Abbey.

Leading Electrical Mechanic (LTO) Reginald Lawrence Reid was the original model for the statue, which has since become the unofficial representative of the Submarine Service.

A silver copy was presented to Her Majesty the Queen on 8th June 1958 to mark the presentation of the first Queens Colour to the Royal Navy Submarine Service. It has been used on many commemorative items including small scale replicas made of different materials including: porcelain, plastic and even the lead from the batteries of Holland I, the Royal Navy's first submarine.

While the trophy itself will remain in the Royal Navy Submarine School, each recipient will receive an engraved miniature, a certificate, a booklet called 'A Potted History of the Submariners Association' and the DVD 'A Breed Apart - A Band of Brothers' with his name included on a specially commissioned Honours Board.

Visits take place on the third Friday of March, May, July, September, November.
(The K13 Weekend in January is by invitation only)

These visits are totally impartial and treated on a 'first come - first served' basis. Please do not make the assumption that because you came in July one year then that will be for all Julys. Each and every visit must be considered as a 'One Off'. You are welcome to arrange to come again the following year but it must be done in an individual and proper manner. Also please be aware that you may find that you are sharing the visit with other branches or Associations (e.g. The RNA). The number of personnel per visit is entirely down to the availability of Base accommodation. Similarly we cannot guarantee a host submarine - but we will always do our best to arrange one! Please remember that this is a fully operational submarine Base and not a theme park therefore because of operational commitments we may have to cancel visits at the LAST moment. Bear this in mind if you are booking air flights!!

There are new security arrangements for entry to the Base. Previously we supplied you with passes. This is no longer the case. Everyone visiting the Base must present photographic ID and have their photograph taken by the MoD Police for the temporary pass.

Normal procedure is that visitors arrive at the base on the Friday at approx. 1600. They will be escorted to the WO & SR Mess and allocated a cabin for the weekend.

We are lucky to have an enthusiastic and loyal support base in the submarine community. Amongst the various different organisations we can count the Submariners Association, Friends of the RN Submarine Museum, Submarine Officers Association, and the members of the City and Serving community. We all drive toward the same goal-to ensure that the story of the Royal Navy Submarine Service is properly told and that in turn we educate future generations ensuring that the 5300 submariners who have given their lives are not forgotten. The Alliance Appeal has demonstrated our passion for the cause; donations given to the Alliance Appeal by fellow members have been incredibly generous and gratefully received. As the Alliance Appeal reaches a mature stage we have an opportunity to consolidate our support base and build our submarine community for the future.

The Royal Navy Submarine Museum is the focal point of the Submarine Community-serving submariners, veterans, families of submariners and anyone who supports the work of the Royal Navy Submarine Museum. We now have a LIVE website which we hope will help to cement the foundations of the submarine community. The link to this website is here We hope that you will join us online. From here you will be able to look at the events that are organised by the Museum and others. You will be able to book events, hold tickets and keep track of how much you have donated. You can even try and find other submariners – a sort of Submariners Reunited. Of course, the more people that sign up, the more effective the website will be. It also provides you with a choice of what you wish to hear about - events, exhibitions, news from other organisations etc. The website is secure and you can select the information that you wish others to see.

If you would like further information, please login as above or contact Allison Dufosee or Rosie Munns on 02392 510354 or email Rosie Munns.
We look forward to seeing you in the ether!

To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Falklands Conflict, the Museums of the National Museum of the Royal Navy will run a day by day account of the conflict using Facebook and Twitter starting on Thursday 29 March. The Royal Navy Submarine Museum, Royal Marines Museum, National Museum of the Royal Navy (Portsmouth Historic Dockyard) and the Fleet Air Arm Museum have put together a comprehensive time line of the Royal Navy's campaign during the conflict in 1982.

Bill Sainsbury, Marketing Manager at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum said, 'Each one of the Museums of the National Museum of the Royal Navy is engaged in telling the story of the last major naval war of the 20th century from our unique perspectives. We hope that by coming together and using Facebook and Twitter on a day by day basis that we can bring this account alive as it happened 30 years ago.'

The Facebook and Twitter timeline will start on Thursday 29 March 2012 to mark the events that led to the invasion of the Falklands on April 2 1982 through to surrender on June 14 1982. The social networking timeline will finish on 25 June. This time line is part of a whole season of commemorative events across the Museums of the National Museum which includes a conference at the National Museum of the Royal Navy (Portsmouth Historic Dockyard) and Fleet Air Arm Museum, a season of talks at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum and the Royal Marines Museum and exhibitions at the Submarine Museum and Fleet Air Arm Museum.

The history of the Royal Navy on the sea, under the sea, in the air and on the land is preserved for the benefit of today's and future generations by The National Museum of the Royal Navy (NMRN) which embraces the museums of the Royal Navy, including NMRN Portsmouth & HMS Victory, The Submarines Museum, the Fleet Air Arm Museum and the Royal Marines Museum. Dear Fellow Submariner,
THE ROYAL NAVY SUBMARINE MUSEUM IN 2012
As many of you will know, the Royal Navy Submarine Museum is going through a period of substantial change brought about by 2 main factors. The first of these is the process of integration with the National Museum of the Royal Navy (NMRN). The Submarine Museum became part of the NMRN in April last year and the Fleet Air Arm Museum and Royal Marines Museum are also now incorporated into the National Museum. But there is a long way to go before full 'convergence' is achieved. There are many benefits to be gained from becoming part of a larger organization where economies of scale and best practice can be brought to bear effectively. But inevitably there will be some loss of autonomy too although Submarine Museum trustees worked hard to ensure that the essential characteristics of the Museum will be preserved.

The second driver for change is the very substantial project that is now underway to preserve the Museum's main attraction, HMS Alliance. Sir Tim McClement and his team did a fantastic job of raising over £6m to pay for conservation work (and we are most grateful to those of you who have supported this effort) which will take about 2 years (expected completion is autumn 2013). We still need to raise about £420k by the end of next year and fundraising is still a major preoccupation. The Alliance Project is managed and funded separately from the museum although of course has a direct impact on the museum's activities. For example, Alliance is expected to be closed from late March for about a month (whilst the fin and casing are removed for refurbishment) and again for the first 3 months of 2013. Up to date information is posted on the Museum's website and we will shortly establish a webcam so that you can see what is going on.

As part of the refit of Alliance, the museum is engaged in a major campaign of volunteer involvement, updating the interpretation of Alliance and other artifacts, improving access, provision of education and learning and a campaign to engage the people of Gosport (many of whom have relatives that have served in submarines) in the museum's activities. We are also working to improve the commercial performance of the museum.

CORPORATE FACILITIES AND SHOP
The museum has excellent (and unique) corporate entertainment facilities that can be provided at discounted rates to ex-submariners. In addition, the museum shop has been relocated and is restocking with a wide range of attractive goods from jewelry to submarine badged clothing (sweaters, fleeces etc), books etc. Purchases can be made on line by clicking on the link:
http://www.submarine-museum.co.uk/planning-your-visit/gift-shop-a-coffee-shop-/online-shop.
Details of corporate facilities from Andrew Poole on 02392510354x238.

FUTURE CITY AND SERVING EVENT
In addition, I would like to offer the Museum as a venue for a future City and Serving event. This would be a break with tradition but would encourage West Country and South of England submariners to join in and, of course, the Londoners can travel as easily by train to Portsmouth as the rest of us do at the moment! Perhaps we should look for a Friday night and invite partners too. That would be really radical!

SUMMARY
These are exciting times for the museum your Museum. Whilst the work on Alliance will mean that some visitor services will be disrupted in the next 18 months or so, we are very much alive and kicking. I enclose a programme of events planned for 2012 which I hope you will take a moment to look at. I look forward to seeing you at one of our events or just visiting with your family. I want to develop the Museum as a focus for veteran and serving submariners but I will need your help to do that!

All the very best for 2012.
Chris Munns
